LARC Low Power Rifle Program

Low Power Rifle is a training program designed by LARC to introduce new shooters to the rhythm and routine of High Power Rifle without the expense and recoil of a high power rifle. It duplicates the course of fire of our high power rifle match of the day and is fired concurrently with the high power match, but is shot with a small bore rifle (.22 Long Rifle) at half size targets set at 50 yards instead of 100 yards. Rifles must have iron sights and should be loaded with detachable magazines (two are needed) so the rapid fire stages can be properly shot. It is recommended that the rifle have sling swivels and a sling, since that will significantly improve your ability to hold the rifle steady. The rifle can be either a semi-automatic or bolt action repeater. The club will have at least one bolt action rifle available for use.

There are two courses of fire, depending on the month. Three times a year (March, July and November), the course is 10 shots slow fire prone in 10 minutes, 20 shots rapid fire prone in two 10 shot/70 second strings, 20 shots rapid fire sitting (in two 10 shot/60 second strings) and 10 shots slow fire offhand (standing, in 10 minutes.) In all other months, the match consists of 20 shots slow fire prone, 10 shots rapid fire prone, 10 shots rapid fire sitting and 10 shots slow fire offhand. In each case, 2 sighting shots and an extra two minutes are allowed during the slow fire prone stage. The rapid fire stages are fired by loading 2 rounds in the first magazine and 8 rounds in the second; the firing is started with the 2 round magazine loaded and it is replaced with the 8 round magazine after the first two shots have been fired (if your magazines hold only 5 rounds, they are loaded 5 and 5.) Bring a couple of boxes of standard velocity ammo and ear and eye protection. Elbow pads and a 3 ft by 6 ft piece of carpet will make things more comfortable, and a telescope will make it possible to see your shot holes in the target (this can be rented from the range.)

Our monthly match is held at 9 AM the first Saturday of each month at Angeles Shooting Ranges (Lake View Terrace, CA) at the far end of the pistol/black powder range, and runs about two hours start to finish. You are invited to come out and watch, ask questions and/or shoot. For further information, contact George Gaskill (909.364.1643 (evenings) or gunneyg@gmail.com)
